Roche fosters diversity, equity and inclusion, representing the communities we serve. When dealing with healthcare on a global scale, diversity is an essential ingredient to success. We believe that inclusion is key to understanding people's varied healthcare needs. Together, we embrace individuality and share a passion for exceptional care. Join Roche, where every voice matters.
The Position
At Roche, we believe it's urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients' lives. We are courageous in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world.
As part of the global technical development organization, the Particle Design group is the center of excellence for the design of drug substance particles with tailor-made solid-state properties to facilitate downstream processing to the drug product. This includes the development and optimization of the processes on laboratory scale, as well as scale-up of the corresponding manufacturing processes in close collaboration with the production sites. Our responsibilities also include the evaluation and implementation of new strategies to obtain particles with the desired properties.
As an Intern in the particle design group you will be working on one of the following project-areas:
Project A. Computational Intern Solid State Sciences
This project is intended to further evolve existing software solutions in the realms of solubility prediction, morphology prediction and crystal structure prediction. The project goal includes conducting literature research on new approaches and testing of these in small subprojects.
The (experimental) work is going to focus on: no experimental work expected.
Project B. Industrialization of Spherical Agglomeration/Crystallization Spherical crystallization
This project addresses two main challenges for the development of spherical agglomeration/crystallization processes:
1. Solvent selection: An efficient solvent selection is a crucial step in applying the technology to a new compound.
2. Endpoint determination for bridging liquid addition: Dosage endpoint detection during spherical agglomeration is important for scale-up, as the primary particles may undergo a certain variation heavily impacting the amount of bridging liquid needed to get the desired agglomerate quality.
Who you are
You are a student (or you graduated within 12 months prior the start date) in the subject of chemistry, chemical or process engineering, pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmaceutical technology, physics or a related field (preferably with a bachelor's degree) and have an interest and experience in crystallization and solid-state characterization. Furthermore, you are interested in using and sharing your knowledge as part of your internship in a modern working environment.
The (experimental) work is going to focus on: Screening procedure optimization for solvent system selection and spherical agglomeration experiments.
Your further profile for one of the positions:
General:
Team-oriented and decision-making personality
Problem solving-oriented work habits
Good knowledge of MS-Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Proficient in English, German is a plus
Experience working in a lab-environment.
For project area A: Basic knowledge of crystallization techniques. Basic knowledge of programming (e.g. Perl, Python) and an interest in computational chemistry.
For project area B: Hands-on experience in various crystallization techniques, formation of emulsions and their stabilization, as well as crystallization techniques.
For project area C: Basic knowledge of pressure driven filtration technologies, ideally in the area of cross-flow membrane filtration.
For project area D: Knowledge in process engineering, powder processing, as well as powder characterization techniques.
This internship opportunity is one of a number of positions we offer in the department per semester. The interviews will take place on an interview day with all considered candidates and the whole department.

https://sdgs.un.org/goals
).Assume that you are writing your own grant application for a 12 months internship on the topic sustainability. Select at least one of the 17 goals, relate it to your education/study and propose a project topic for an internship out of it.
Please ensure that you have attached all the required documents before you submit your application in the system, as it will not be possible to attach any missing documents later.
For Non-EU/EFTA citizens: Due to regulations, you must provide a certificate issued by your university stating that an Internship is mandatory for your studies.
Selected candidates will be invited to a virtual interview day which will take place on 16.10.2024.
The Internship will start in 2025 for 9-12 months, please indicate your preferred start date and duration in your application.
