Trader/Analyst Intern (Hong Kong/Singapore) – Summer 2025

To ensure that our curious staff never stop learning, we offer onsite and online courses to aid in professional development, we utilize a supportive mentorship system, and we bring in leading thinkers from academia and industry to discuss everything from space exploration to the physics of cooking. We also curate a Technical Speaker series dedicated to computing, economics, machine learning, and statistics. Our goal is to give all of our staff the opportunity to grow through challenging work, friendly colleagues, and a culture of continuous learning.

Our Application Management System is offline for scheduled maintenance. We encourage you to check back soon.

Interviewing is important to our hiring process. As we get to know you better, you’ll get the chance to know our firm better, too.

Compelling candidates tend to:

A successful hiring process often includes an application review, a phone interview and virtual interviews, conversations with your references, and, finally, an offer. We may also ask you to provide a writing sample or code sample, and to complete a case study. Depending on the role, your process may differ slightly.

As an intern, you’ll focus on some of the most challenging and interesting problems in finance and technology, while learning from experienced managers, tailored educational programming, and distinguished guest speakers. You’ll also share in community-building social events with fellow interns and employees.

We encourage undergraduate and graduate students from all academic disciplines, schools, and class years to apply, though most of our interns join us the summer before they graduate.

If you haven’t previously considered finance as a career, that’s great! Though it’s also great if you have. We’re more interested in talent, curiosity, and analytical thinking than in any particular skill or experience, and we’re excited to see how you’ve demonstrated initiative and what you’ve achieved. If you thrive in a principled, collaborative, and intellectually curious environment, you should feel at home with us.

Most of our interns work in our New York City headquarters. Others work in Denver, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore (when you apply, you can state your office interest). We provide housing support to interns. Summer internships typically run from June to August.

We consider applications on a rolling basis to accommodate a range of recruiting timelines and student obligations. That said, as we typically complete the selection of our intern class early in the first quarter of the internship year, we recommend applying for 2025 internships by year-end 2024.

Since 2016, we’ve hosted a set of unique educational opportunities aiming to bring together talented and intellectually curious students and provide them with exposure to what we do at the D. E. Shaw group.

The fellowships include an introduction to our firm, insights into our rigorous approach to finance and technology, and several professional and social networking opportunities. Students attending U.S. Colleges and universities from all academic disciplines, including those without a background in finance, are welcome to apply.

An actual human will review your application. If we think there might be a good match between your background and our needs, we’ll schedule a phone interview. If we find a mutual interest, one or more virtual interviews would follow.

At the D. E. Shaw group, we value clear and concise written communication. We’re interested in seeing how you write: your sample can be for work, school, or fun, and could include an essay, article, proposal, legal brief, term paper, or (for relevant roles) technical writing. The sample should be an expository piece of work written in English, several pages in length (but no longer than 15 pages; an excerpt from a larger work is welcome), and entirely your own work, unedited by anyone else. Please don’t send cover letters, resumes, creative writing (i.e., fiction), or statements of purpose as your writing sample. You’re welcome to improve the piece yourself if it’s been a few years since you wrote it—we’d love to see something you’re particularly proud of!

Yes, you can apply for multiple positions through our job openings. We will also consider your application for any other positions we deem relevant to your background and experience, regardless of the positions in which you’ve expressed interest on your application.

We have a hybrid work schedule, with most employees coming into the office three days a week.
