PhD position – Advanced detection and analysis of micro/nanoplastics in the environment in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

Applications are invited for a PhD position in the (Prof. Dr. J. Wang). You will also receive co-supervision from Dr. Sung Sik Lee at ScopeM (). You will matriculate in ETH Zürich.

Position starting from March 2024 or upon agreement.

Project background

The research focuses on the development of detection and analysis methods for airborne micro/nanoplastic particles. Due to the excessive use of plastics, plastic pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental concerns over the past decade. Ongoing research into the detection of airborne microplastics is in its early stages, with limited standardization in the methods for collection and analysis. In this project, our aim is to create highly efficient and reliable platforms for capturing micro/nanoplastics in various environments. We will then proceed to quantify and characterize them morphologically and chemically, using a multidisciplinary approach that includes material design, device development, imaging, and spectroscopy. This will be achieved through close collaboration with internationally renowned research groups.

Job description

Additionally, our teams are actively involved in the development of various sensors targeting plastics and biological pollutants, as well as advanced microscopy and microfluidics. This will provide a wide range of opportunities for you.

You will be involved in tasks such as:

  • Developing active and passive sampling methods for micro/nanoplastics with high efficiency
  • Developing integrated microfluidic devices to sort and analyze nano/microparticles
  • Identifying unknown nano/microparticles using Raman spectroscopy and machine learning analysis of images and spectra
  • Developing integrated microfluidic devices for assessing the bio-toxicity of nano/microparticles, which is crucial for health risk evaluation
Your profile
  • You should have a master level degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, or related fields with excellent grades.
  • Proficiency in experimental techniques and experience in microfluidics, Raman spectroscopy/microscopy, or machine learning is of high value.
  • A good command of English is required.
